Breech block face showing effects of neglect when not cleaned properly after firing with black powder.
Reverse side of breech block showing patents.
Inherent problem of Sharps carbines or rifles when fired with paper/linen cartridges and not cleaned properly. When closing the breech
on these non-brass rounds, the knife edge tends to spill powder between the breech block and forearm. When enough powder is present it often ignited when the weapon was fired, or when enough residue was present firing a round would increase the pressure in the forearm area causing a crack.
After firing with non-brass cartridges, the forearm must be taken off with the breech block out to clean. It is very obvious that somebody not familiar with this weapon fired it, neglected proper cleaning and then tried to repair the damage.
